Power Plant Water Treatment System Restored After a Decade of Non-Use

After ten years of inactivity, a midwestern combined cycle power plant needed to bring its water treatment system back into operation. The previous equipment had been sitting idle after the previous owner went bankrupt, and required major cleanup and upgrades. While other water treatment companies were offering a chemical exclusive program, it was evident the plant would require a complete integrated solution to once again become operational and efficient.

To gain a complete understanding of the plant’s goals and needs, U.S. Water conducted multiple site visits, which included both plant and people surveys. Collaborative efforts between plant personnel and many members of the U.S. Water sales team, leadership, and the Equipment and Engineering team led to the development and implementation of the optimal solution for the plant. With a strong focus on power industry best practices and approaches, U.S. Water’s integrated solution included retrofits and upgrades to existing equipment, chemical solutions and advanced technology.

A variety of water systems throughout the plant were refurbished during this project, including raw and wastewater, tower and steam cycles, and reverse osmosis (RO) and closed loop systems. The existing RO equipment was restored and used to produce demineralized water, while the boiler treatment was upgraded for HRSG. In their wastewater system, the outdated chemical feed equipment was upgraded to polymer feed equipment and paired with advanced automation technology for improved program accuracy. U.S. Water also worked with plant management to obtain NPDES permitting, and trained operators on maintenance and efficiency concepts, as well as chemical treatment and system control. The successful partnership between U.S. Water and the plant led to a staffing agreement for a full-time U.S. Water technician to manage the water treatment plant.

To reach the plant’s operational goals and restore its dormant water treatment system, U.S. Water assisted the plant through design, construction, commissioning, and operation with continued improvements as budgets allowed. The U.S. Water sales representative continues to ensure that these goals are met through communication and a team approach with internal support staff.

The success of U.S. Water’s integrated solution, and the valued partnership that formed, has since prompted plant management to rely on U.S. Water’s expertise during the construction of the water treatment plant at a new facility.
